The Protection of Migrants against Gender-Based Violence – Prevention, Identification, Assistance”. A series of Romanian videos and presentations

Starting on April 6th Alternative Sociale Association published a series of presentations from professionals from national and international institutions and representatives of communities of migrant communities in Romania, part of an event titled „The Protection of Migrants against Gender-Based Violence – Prevention, Identification, Assistance”. The scope of the event was to facilitate the knowledge of the difficulties and opportunities available.

  • On April 06th Catalin Luca, PhD, psychologist and President of Alternative Sociale spoke of the difficulties of migration and its challenges to the mental health of migrants.

  • On April 07th we heard Dana Pirvu from Alternative Sociale speaking of the information and awareness raising activities conducted with migrant women from Galati and Radauti reception centers and from the Iasi community (0:54). We also heard Dr. Mahmoud Ismail, the imam of the muslim community of Iasi speaking of the hardships that muslim women go through, the inner and external barriers they have to overcome (4:51). A very relevant and touching contribution was that of Ms. Haneen, who spoke of her experience as a child that had to leave her old life behind in Egypt and start a new one in Romania (13:56).

  • The presentations of April 08th were dedicated to the field of prevention. Sorin Stănică, Director of the Institute for Crime Prevention and Research spoke of the activities that the Romanian Police and the Institute are conducting for the prevention of gender-based violence. Mr. Maximilian Nicolae, head of the Romanian National Agency against Trafficking in Persons spoke of the current and future activities of the agency for the prevention and for the coordination of the assistance for victims of trafficking, one of the worst forms of GBV.

  • On April 09th Flavius Ilioni Loga, expert in the field migrants’ assistance presented a report that Alternative Sociale and AIDROM produced in order to clarify roles and facilitate referral for preventing GBV, identify migrant victims of violence and provide protection and assistance.

  • On April 10th Alexandru Gulei, PhD, executive director of Alternative Sociale and coordinator of the project SWIM in Romania presented the resources created within the project for migrants and professionals. A special place in the presentation was given to the ”EU Charter for Strengthening Protection for Women and Girls against Gender Based Violence in Asylum Reception Systems”

  • A special contribution to the event was the presentation of Ms. Diana Dragoș, Media and Communications of the International Organization for Migration, Mission in Romania. Ms Dragos spoke of the IOM’s role in the assistance of governments which are confronted with crisis but also for the support of individuals at risk, in Romania and around the world.
